Soul Connection

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel or vortex of energy. The chakras are energy transducers in the aura. They serve to integrate physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual facets of the human into a cohesive whole. Although we generally focus on the 7 major chakras within the physical body, there are 21 minor chakra points and hundreds of smaller vortices (minor chakras, lesser chakras and acupuncture points) located within the body.

The 7 Major Chakras are known as the Base Chakra, the Sacral Chakra, the Solar Plexus Chakra, the Heart Chakra, the Throat Chakra, the Third Eye or Brow Chakra and the Crown Chakra. Each Chakra has a specific colour (see chart above). The Base Chakra is red, the Sacral is orange, the Solar Plexus is yellow, the Heart is green (although some texts will put the colour pink here as well), the Third Eye/Brow is indigo and the Crown Chakra is violet.

Each of the seven chakras perform a vital role in the functioning of our physical bodies and our normal subjective consciousness. The description of the functions of the chakras is not simply physiological, but also psychological. Thus, when we discuss the functions of the chakras we are relating physiological functions with psychological behaviours.

Each of our five senses is associated with a particular chakra: Touching is associated with the Base Chakra, hearing, smelling and tasting with the Throat Chakra and seeing with the Third Eye or Brow Chakra.

Each of the Chakras has a musical note associated with it. The Base Chakra resonates with the musical note C, the Sacral Chakra with D, the Solar Plexus Chakra with E, the Heart Chakra with F, the Throat Chakra with G, the Third Eye/Brow Chakra with A and the Crown Chakra with B.

Every major chakra point on the front of the body is paired with its counterpart on the back of the body. Together they are considered to be the front and rear aspect of one chakra. The frontal aspects are related to a person’s feelings and the rear aspects are related to a person’s will.

According to eastern esoteric literature, each chakra is said to have a certain number of petals. Barbara Ann Brenan suggests, however, that these petals are actually small rotating vortices spinning at extremely high rates, with each vortex vibrating at a particular frequency. The chakras serve to vitalize the body and are therefore directly related to any pathology (illness, disease) in the body. They absorb Universal energy, break it up into component parts and then distribute it along energy paths called nadis to the nervous system, the endocrine glands and then the blood to nourish the body. Each chakra is associated with an endocrine gland and a major nerve plexus.

It is important to work with the energy within each chakra and to increase the flow of energy, because the more energy we let flow, the healthier we are. An illness within our system is caused by an imbalance of energy or the blocking of the flow of energy within our bodies.

I will be taking an in-depth look at each Chakra in my future Blog Posts.
